My musical journey began in 2002 in the underground music stream. I used to jam with other poets, emcees
and musician at various open mic sessions around Johannesburg.

Bassline (when it was still in Melville) and the now shut down, Horror Cafe groomed many artists that continue to enjoy a fruitful journey in the mainstream music industry.

Contrary to popular belief, my first song was Released in the album ‘Sgubhu Samampela- Sisters in Song.’

I am currently working on Azanian Love Song, a collaboration with soul singer, MaxHoba. Where we are remaking Dr Don Mattera’s poems into songs. We plan to have a roadshow and visit a town near you. It is a an electric fusion on poetry, rap and live music.

I continue to work with local house djs to keep my brand alive. My last collaboration was the song WENA which did very well in the market and was also released in a compilation in germany. The song is on dj Sumthyn Black’s album, My way of house vol 1.

I am currently working with dj Nipro on a concept called WORD OF HOUSE.

A compilation released in 2004, which included late musical giants Brenda Fassie and Lebo Mathosa (I Love Music).

I did the intro for the album and had a track called ‘LIGHT UP MY LIFE.’ In 2005, my hugely popular single, ‘URONGO’ was released on DJ Fresh’s Definition of House3. It went on to be the biggest selling house song in south Afrika that year.

I started working on my solo album in 2004 when  the poetry collective i was a part of, Feela Sistah, disbanded. I organised studio time and musicians and embarked on the journey of MaMiya.

I called the album MaMiya, which is my clan name. I wanted to dedicate my work to my ancestors and all those that came before me. I wanted my album to be a spiritual representation of who I am.

In junior school my ‘quote’ in the year book was, ’Variety is the spice of Life.’ Which is exactly what I did with my album. I wanted to capture a little of bit of every corner inside my soul. There is a strong hip hop influence and bits of
house, hints of soul and a pintch of drum and bass.

This was obviously a very brave move as i had acquired an enormous house
music fanbase, because of my first single, ‘Urongo,”  However, I felt that it was important for me to be true to me and who I am, than to jump into a genre of music where, essentially, I just got lucky.

I was at the right place, at the right time and of course, The Talent. ( I have to honour my talent  and acknowledge her because she does SO MUCH for me).

The journey of  making and releasing of this album was not an easy one, but I
did give it my best shot. I also had the honour of working with some amazing South African producers.ie Mahoota, Semitone, 37mph, Jazzworx, Mpho Mokwele and I collabarated with dope artists Khuli (of Morafe), Bafana (of Kwani Experience) aswell as my younger sister Nomsa. My album, MaMiya, was nominated for a South African Music Award in the category, Best Urban Pop Album.

It is a meeting point between dj Nipro’s popular, soulful house music mixes and my poetry. This stage act proved to be very popular as we test drove it on a tour of Venda over the 2010 festive season.

2010 also saw me pay more attention to my act with my band. I have been working with them since 2005, but we have never really had the platform to do our thang.

We have ‘rocked’ a few shows, however my image as a house muso has made it difficult for people to make the switch. However this is by faaaaar my favourite act. 2011 will see me being more proactive in exposing my favourite part of my musical journey.

Next on the to do list is the next album coupled with a live dvd recording!

“Only Your Love” – Pops Mohamed and Friends

Following the release of his 38th Album, Society Vibes – Fast Forward, legendary African Instrumentalist and composer Pops Mohamed presents the video to his lead single “Only Your Love” featuring Zubz and Ntsiki Mazwai.

“This is exactly what I want the audience to see in their minds when they hear the song” says Pops Mohamed of the video, “Pictures of life, Africa and the power of music.”

Beautiful shots of Pops Mohamed, Ntsiki Mazwai and Zubz working on the recording of the song in Pop’s studio are interlaced with pictures of Africa’s wonderful landscapes and peoples.

The video is a powerful depiction of the ability of music to transport listeners
into different worlds of peace, tranquility and love. Scenes of the artists’ live performances played against footage of the celebrations of the San People.

“I gave her carte blanche with the video because I respect what she has done over the years with Boom Shaka, Moses Molelekwa and her documentary,
!Gubi”. Like me, she also has a soft spot for the San. She is the best.” Pops adds.

Asked about his highlight in the video, Pops immediately responds, “Hands down, it’s Myesha! How she sang the chorus impromptu and Lianne cut it in with the San kids completely does it for me!” Myesha is Lianne’s daughter who was on set at the shoot.

Featured artists Zubz and Ntsiki Mazwai believe the video is unlike any other video out right now because it feels authentic. “It is authentic to the song and the artists in the video” says Zubz, “Which is something that is rare in videos today. That’s what will make this video stand out for years to come. It feels real.”

Being an internationally recognized musical icon Pops Mohamed chose to release the video online before placing it on traditional music media platforms and has already received hits and comments from across the globe.
